Education in the Western Balkans is divided into four stages.
- Nursery & Preschool — optional
- Primary Education — mandatory, lasting for 8 years in all countries except Bosnia and Herzegovina where it lasts for 9 years
- Secondary Education — optional, lasting for 3 or 4 years
